I’m Amoh. I’m trying to know new people and have actual fun.

Not networking. Not “let’s connect.” The other thing — the one where you end up on a rooftop at 1am arguing about jollof with someone you met four hours ago.

Scroll and the headline gets heavier. That’s the whole trick. Keep going.

    The 4am jollof argument

My aunt’s recipe vs. the one from the place on Coldharbour Lane. I have a spreadsheet. I am not joking about the spreadsheet.

    Peckham Levels on a Thursday

Cheap, loud, and everyone there is doing something they actually care about. Best place in London to talk to a stranger without it being weird.

    Sunday league, Hackney Marshes

Pitch 14. We are bad. Two of us are genuinely good and they tolerate the rest of us out of what I can only assume is pity.

    Ridley Road at 7am

Plantain, yam, and the best gossip in East London. I go early because the good stuff is gone by nine and so is the atmosphere.

    Someone else’s gig

I go to a lot of small shows for people I’ve never heard of. It’s the fastest way to meet five new people in one night.

    A drive to nowhere

Last one was Margate in February. Rained the whole time. Still one of the best days of the year. Bring a coat and no plan.

    Cooking for eight people

I cook, you bring someone I don’t know. That’s the rule. It has never once gone badly, which statistically is suspicious.

who is this

Born in Accra, raised between there and Croydon, now in Walthamstow with a very loud fridge. I do product work for a small company you haven’t heard of, which pays for the dinners and the train tickets.

The short version: I moved to London at nineteen knowing four people, and I was miserable for about a year because I assumed friendships would just happen to me the way they did at school. They don’t. So I started doing the embarrassing thing — asking near-strangers to get food, going to things alone, saying yes to invitations I had no energy for. It worked. It’s still working.

I’m not a connector or a community builder or whatever the LinkedIn word is. I just like people, and I’ve noticed most people are quietly waiting for someone to make the first move. So I make it. That’s the entire philosophy.

say hi

One line is enough. “Free Thursday?” works. So does a whole paragraph. I answer everything.

Thanks for reading the whole thing. Most people don’t. — A.
